The Dundalk Style

I made a submission to change the Local Area Plan, that was unanimously supported, to include the ‘Dundalk Style’ in our Local Development plan. This protects our unique built heritage for generations and formally recognises a part of our town’s distinct fabric. I’m grateful for the support of the Louth Archaeological and Historical Society for their advice and support.

What is the Dundalk Style? During a time of economic prosperity, this style reflects the confidence of Dundalk’s merchant class through ornate, eye-catching buildings that still grace our streets, particularly around Market Square.

The “Dundalk Style” is all about elegance and flair. Like the Courthouse (1819), inspired by an ancient Greek temple, or the Italianate Town Hall (1865), now home to An Táin Arts Centre, with its intricate brickwork and bold design. It's very evident in the decorative commercial facades common of our main streets, brought back to life recently by Dundalk BIDS efforts to paint them, showcase a planned town layout that sets Dundalk apart from other towns.

These buildings are a testament to Dundalk’s built history as a thriving rail and trade hub. Stroll through Clanbrassil Street or Roden Place to admire the craftsmanship of a bygone era that would go on to inspire other neo-classical styles. Whether you’re a lifelong local or a newer face in town, the “Dundalk Style” invites you to connect with the town’s past while enjoying its vibrant present.

The Tourist Center has a very cool poster you can collect showcasing elements of the Dundalk Styel.
